"The knowledge I have gained ... changed the direction of my life."
As a high school student in the 1970s, I did not fully appreciate the importance of education. Nearly 30 years later, I now understand the significance of having an education in today's society. Madisonville Community College provided an opportunity for me to pursue a college degree without leaving my hometown. Having the college locaed in Central City allowed me to begin my sudies and continue working. After attaining two associate degrees, I was able to continue on toward a baccalaureate degree through MCC's affiliation with Murray State University. In May 2007, I will complete a BS and plan to obtain a master's degree. Just a few short years ago, I felt this was an unattainable goal for me. The knowledge I have gained and the people I have been privileged to meet have changed the direction of my life completely. Without Madisonville Community College, this would not have been possible. I urge anyone of any age to continue their education because education is a lifetime endeavor.

"My hope has been rekindled."
I dropped out of high school at the beginning of my junior year. I believed that I had a future in the grocery business as a carry-out clerk. I got married and have been a member of the Kentucky workforce for 28 years. In April of this year, I became a dislocated worked. The manufacturing company where I had worked for the last 12 years closed its doors and left me and many others without work. I had experience, but not much education. All the good jobs required a high school diploma or GED. I fought the thought of studying for the GED. I wanted to give up and quit, like I had done so many times in my life, but with the help of my faith and some very dear friends at Madisonville Community College's Adult Centers for Educational Excellence (ACE2), I did get my GED, with high scores. My hope has been rekindled, and I am going to college in the spring.
